内容摘要:The impacts of improved irrigation practices and future climate change on the temporal and spatial variability of water availability in the arid regions received more and more attention as drought continues and demands continue to soar. In this talk I will use a project in Rincon Valley of New Mexico, USA as case study to explain such impacts. To simulate the hydrological process with the watershed, we developed a Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The model covers the Rio Grande reach from Caballo Reservoir to Leasburg Dam and irrigated agricultural area within the Rincon Valley. The SWAT model utilized automatic irrigation method to quantify available irrigation water and groundwater recharge with different irrigation efficiency and assess water yield with projected climate data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) RCP 8.5 scenario for the period of 2014-2033. The improved irrigation practices can be translated into better water distribution in a watershed and increase crop productivity. The water stress is getting higher in the downstream areas for the future. The approach is applicable for better quantification of basin-scale water savings in areas with intensive irrigated agriculture. The quantification of temporal and spatial changes of flows in the river and the underlying aquifer under extreme weather conditions provides better guidelines for long-term water planning and river operations.
